The Problem
Large automotive parts ( like door panels and dash boards) are made up of many components, wires, clips, metal brackets, metal tie bars, etc : For example an automotive front dashboard could have the following : two or three very large parts form fitted or ultrasonically welded, many many screws, may clips, wire harness clips, wires, squeak protectors, metal brackets, tie bar, air bag bracket and assembly, etc, and the surface is either multi layer or is painted. These parts have been dumped in the landfill for years.

IEI Solution
IEI in close partnership with one such supplier, identified this issue of landfilling and took up a project to learn and then design a process to recycle maximum amount of these materials. Whole assemblies are brought to the IEI facility, loosely in rolloffs or in smaller metal containers.
These parts are disassembled. All the foreign attachments (clips, metal, labels, glue, felt, etc) are manually removed. This involves hammering, cutting and grinding. The large part is then cut and ground. The regrind still has paint on it. This regrind is then chemically processed and rinsed to remove all the paint. The regrind is then dried.
We have identified use of this material in regrind form or after pelletizing.
