Intercontinental Export-Import, Inc. in 1987, Dr. Naik did so out of the basement of his home. Recycled plastic scrap was purchased from either molders, producers or brokers and was exported to Asian countries. The primary focus during the company’s first three years was the marketing of the products overseas and establishing a firm network of people to work with in those countries.
As a result, IEI now enjoys strong affiliations in over twenty countries globally and has its own office in Mumbai, India. The company had its first warehousing operation by 1990, where they began with a grinding and baling operation in a 10,000 sq. ft. warehouse. After several moves, each time to a larger location, the company is now settled in a 170,000 sq. ft. facility owned by one of the real estate companies held by the Naik Group of Industries. It is located in Odenton, Maryland, ten miles from Baltimore-Washington International Airport and only 17 miles from the famous Inner Harbor of downtown Baltimore.
IEI is capable of performing almost any recycling process, but its core emphasis remains focused on export. The Port of Baltimore, one of the largest on the Eastern Seaboard, allows for very efficient movement of export containers from our facility. Dr. Naik has always stressed the importance of the technical aspects of this business and is not afraid to tackle recycling projects that most others in the industry would not touch.

In this vein, he has begun expanding the scope of IEI’s business into adhesives, printing ink, polymer emulsions, thermoset resins, solvents, pigments, etc. And even while working out the complexities of moving in so many new directions at once, he is still keeping a keen eye out for any other new possibilities for further venture into the world of plastics recycling.
In the 1980's & 1990's, the trading of recycled plastic was a strong, profitable business. Selling recyclable and/or scrap material to overseas concerns without even having seen the material was fairly common.
The industry has changed considerably since that time. Now, every supplier is searching for ways to maximize revenue from the waste stream. We embraced this change in a positive direction and performed forward and backward integration to provide "Total Service" to both our customers and suppliers.
